Studying the Stars Workshop

I love piecing blocks with set-in seams ever since Mary in Watertown, NY shared her discovery of how to chain piece through y-seams with me.
I want to teach everyone this technique and my Studying The Stars Workshop is my favorite venue for achieving this.

This is my most recent set of hexagonal blocks and they are going to serve as a "play set" during my workshops for a little while (until I settle on a setting fabric to use with them).
When you participate in the workshop, you'll get to use the blocks to experiment with setting ideas during the second day.
I have four different samplers to share with you that feature block examples and different settings.
This is the simplest of the four and really shows off the stars!
This is the easiest to construct though it does look more complex but that's an illusion created by using pieced setting triangles with a wide variety of fabrics.  It also makes it more difficult to focus on individual stars.
This is a more complex looking setting blending tumbling blocks in amongst the stars but it's not a hard setting to construct.
The fourth sample is my version of Lucy Carson Kingwell's Smitten.  It combines two sizes of hexagonal blocks and introduces students to the potential of working with the full range of possibilities.
I am excited to be offering this workshop in a two-day format for the first time on March 17 and 18, 2017 during the Lake Metroparks Farmpark Quilt Show in Kirtland, Ohio.  If you live in the region, there are still openings -- sign up HERE -- and I'm happy to help you find a place to stay if you'd prefer not to drive home Friday evening.  (We are having a mild winter and I understand the long-range weather forecast for March is "warmer than usual" so don't be shy.)

If you are a member of the Virginia Consortium of Quilters, I'll be presenting my one-day version of this workshop as part of  Celebration 2018!

And I would love to work with guilds or shops to present either format of this workshop!
Just e-mail me at maryhueyquilts at hotmail dot com or leave a comment below and I'll get in touch with you.

You can also order my DVD, Set-In Piecing Simplified for an in-home workshop with me on the piecing technique and then use the series of blogposts collected together under the Diamond Star Playtime tab (up at the top of the page) to create your own amazing sampler of 6-pointed stars!

I hope your week is off to a good start!
Mary

  1. Wish I could go, but signed up for something that weekend already. My favorites are the first and fourth - especially your version of Smitten - it's much more soothing than the original. Great work, Mary.

  2. Oh my gosh, just saw your reference to Watertown, NY. I have a dear friend who grew up in the Watertown area. She owns a cottage at Pillar Point on the lake.
We became good friends thru quilting. She invited me to go with her several summers, We worked on quilting in the a.m. and visited friends and relatives in the afternoon. Best vacations I ever had -- spent time with dear friend and favorite hobby! Beautiful area! We live in GA.
