My entry is PIECEFUL CONSTELLATIONS.
It is a large wall hanging -- no one will ever sit on this quilt!!
I have been fascinated with all things 60 degree since a generous student showed me how to piece set-in seams easier! I can piece a tumbling block unit as fast as I can piece a 4-patch so set-in piecing is now fun!!
This quilt began with one of my "sacred" stacks of fabric that I gathered up on a teaching trip to Quilt Quarters in Carmel, IN along with some oldies but goodies from my diverse stash. I am determined to use up the best fabric in my stash -- I do not want that beautiful stuff to be someone's "steal" at the yard sale when they clear out my studio!!
I had such a good time cutting up pieces of fabric and making interesting blocks!
It was like assembling a puzzle -- except that I was in control of where the pieces fit together. The "constellation" appeared as I moved the blocks around and waited for more inspiration.
I even had some fussy anal moments like when I took this block out after the entire top was assembled because the plaid background diamonds weren't oriented correctly. Happily, I learned that it's much easier to fix a mistake in a hexagon quilt than it is in a straight set of square blocks because each seam only impacts two blocks, not an entire row of them!!
The last inspiration was the quilting design for the borders which followed a grid that matched the 60 degree angles of the piecing.
I love this quilt!!
I'm entering in the Blogger's Quilt Festival, Original Design Quilts over at Amy's Creative Side. The entries are so diverse and I hope you'll enjoy looking at all of them and being the "judge".

I love the fabrics you used in your quilt. They're very calm and peaceful. (Or do I mean pieceful?)
ReplyDeleteThanks! I think "peaceful" is appropriate!
DeleteI like you theory of using you rest fabrics - excellent. I wasn't going to add a second entry in the festival - I really wasn't but did tonight....
ReplyDeleteThis one is quite amazing, especially when you realise it isn't epp. Great job and a good idea to keep it safely on the wall!
Thanks, Karen -- have to go look for your entries!
DeleteYour quilt is gorgeous Mary. I love the colours and there are so many interesting shapes to enjoy and little surprises (like the butterfly) tucked in. I wish you luck!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Karen -- it was fun to piece this quilt -- hard to leave the fabric pile and do my other work!!
DeleteI love your quilt too. That teal, brown and gold combination are just that restful, but so regal,too.. And the piecing - wow!
ReplyDeleteThanks, A!
DeleteThis is a beautiful quilt.Beautiful colours and a wonderful pattern. I like the way you say there is an easy way to piece set in seams, I hope I come across it one day. It certainly works for you with your great piecing.
ReplyDeleteThanks! I have actually produced a DVD workshop that includes all the demos I do when I'm teaching the technique -- you can read more about it at http://www.maryhueyquilts.com/index.html
DeleteMary, your quilt is just beautiful. Are you able to share your student's easier way to piece set-in seams?
ReplyDeleteI'm sure many of us would appreciate learning a better way to do this. Thank you.
